IDMEN — A group exhibition of Greek and international artists at A49 Art Space, in Kalamata.
The exhibition is a collaborative project with the Archaeological Museum of Patras.
The purpose of this joint project is to find ways of approaching some of the major themes of antiquity in the Museum’s permanent collection and to relate them to the present. In other words, our intention is to create a thought-provoking dialogue between the past and the present.
In addition, the artists could examine the concept of museums and their artefacts, as an institution, in the broader context.
The permanent collection provides a large spectrum of themes: life, the emporium and sea-trade market, welfare, agriculture, environmental issues, war, athletics, theatre and public life, Roman architecture and ancient ceremonies.
We chose the concept of IDMEN (= we know) to illustrate the function of art as described in the Theogony of Hesiod (fragment 25–30). It was originally the idea of Spyros Fengos, and we pay tribute to him by using IΔΜΕΝ for both the title and the theme of the exhibition.
