A49 — art space

A49 art space, Kalamata — black-and-white interior

A49 is a space for expression and creation in Kalamata. It operates as a gallery and an open space — an open field where artists come to exhibit, to work, and to meet the public and one another.

From its very first day, its programme has spanned a broad range of modern and contemporary Greek art. The walls of A49 have given shelter to historic voices such as Yannis Tsarouchis, Giorgos Lappas, Vasso Katraki, Alexis Akrithakis, Yannis Gaitis, Costas Varotsos, Dimitris Mytaras, Dimitris Kentakas, Chandris, Apergis and Bouteas — alongside tributes to figures such as Melina Mercouri.

At the same time, the space gives a platform to contemporary Greek creators: Dimitris Tzamouranis, Leonidas Angelopoulos, Manolis Giannos, Giorgos Vrachnos, Andreas Devetzis and Filippos Tsitsopoulos.

The international dialogue is just as alive. Artists such as Stuart Cox, Peter Eastland, Jenny Brosinski, Kerstin Grimm, David Nicholson, Johannes Kahrs, Jean-Yves Klein, Andrea Stappert, Joachim Elzmann, Stefan Rinck and John Isaacs have shown work at A49, carrying their practices and languages from the European scene to the landscape of the southern Peloponnese.

A49 believes that creation needs a place to breathe — a space where the artist expresses freely and the viewer finds the time to look. With respect for the history and the landscape of Messenia, and with its gaze turned outward, it remains a living meeting point between the local and the international, between the past and the present of art.
