A49 continues its commitment to spotlighting important Messinian artists with a retrospective of the surrealist painter Yiannis Gialourakis (1922–2008).
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, to Greek parents with roots in Symi and Kythira, Gialourakis developed a passion for painting, sculpture, and the arts from an early age. He lived and worked in Montreal and California, where he ran his own galleries, before settling in Kalamata — the place he chose for his final creative years.
The retrospective brings together representative works from all of the artist’s creative periods: painting, sculpture, and documentary film, revealing both his surrealist visual language and his enduring love for the beauty and history of Greece.
