The Inadequacy of Logic

A49 Art Space presents the solo exhibition by Stuart Cox titled “The Inadequacy of Logic.”

Stuart Cox is a Fine Art practitioner who completed his formal Fine Art education at The Slade School of Fine Art (University College London) during the mid-to-late 1970s under the tutorage of British artist Malcolm Hughes, during the Slade professorships of Sir William Coldstream and Sir Lawrence Gowing. Throughout decades of practice, his major reference points have been numerical and geometric systems and Goethe’s Colour Theories — primarily the theories of coloured shadows.

These references underpin his work across the media of light, paint on canvas, and 3D installation. Although rooted in the modernist and formalist tradition, his work has embraced digital technology and computer-based systems from the early 1970s to the present day — without which many of the current works would not be possible.

In addition to its formalist structure, his most recent work addresses the ageless human struggle between reason and our logical selves on the one hand, and our emotions and passions on the other. Colour remains a significant focal point — even in works where it has been purposely removed.

Since establishing a studio in Kalamata in 2002, the influence of Greece, its colours and its light, have shaped Stuart’s palette. This exhibition is the culmination of 22 years of his work on canvas and represents his passionate relationship with the city of Kalamata. It consists almost exclusively of oil paint on canvas and ink drawings on paper.
