Yiannis Gialourakis

Born on March 11, 1922, in Alexandria, Egypt, to Greek parents with roots in Symi and Kythira. The youngest child and only boy of a family of six, he developed a passion for painting and sculpture from his teenage years. In 1955 he met his future wife Margaret Birss, a Physics and Chemistry professor at the University of Alexandria. They moved to North America and settled in Montreal, where Gialourakis worked as an architect and opened his own gallery. He later moved the gallery to California. Upon his wife’s retirement, the couple chose Kalamata as their final home, where Gialourakis devoted himself to painting, sculpture, and documentary film. He died peacefully on March 11, 2008.
