Kerstin Grimm

Kerstin Grimm is a Berlin-based artist whose practice moves fluidly between drawing, collage and sculpture. Born in Oranienburg in 1956, she first studied German language and literature at Humboldt University in Berlin before turning formally to the visual arts in the early 1980s. She developed her distinctive figurative language in evening classes at the Kunsthochschule Berlin, focusing on drawing and later sculpture. Her large-scale drawing collages and bronze figures stage enigmatic encounters between girls, animals and hybrid beings in landscapes that oscillate between fairytale and dystopia. Grimm’s works explore the fragile boundary between childhood play and latent menace, combining delicate lines, layered papers and a subtle use of colour to create scenes that are both seductive and unsettling. Over the years she has received several grants and awards, and her works are held in numerous public and private collections.
