Filippos Tsitsopoulos

Filippos Tsitsopoulos (b. 1967, Athens) is an artist working between London and Athens whose practice spans painting, digital media, video theatre and installation art. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and completed his PhD at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1996, where he lived and worked until 2012. From 2005 to 2012 he worked in the Art Department of the Museo del Prado in Madrid. His video installations and performances, often influenced by Baroque aesthetics, have been presented at venues such as the Serpentine Gallery, Tate Modern, FACT Liverpool, the Bluecoat, Frieze Art Fair and Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, as well as in numerous theatres and performance festivals in the UK and Europe. Using elaborately constructed masks as tools of protection, disguise, identity, isolation and resilience, he explores the tension between authentic and performed identity and how social roles and power structures fragment the self.
