Dimitris Kentakas — Solo Exhibition

A49 Art Space presents a solo exhibition dedicated to painter and iconographer Dimitris Kentakas (b. 1906), one of the most significant figures in 20th-century religious painting in Kalamata.

A student of Konstantinos Parthenis at the Athens School of Fine Arts, Kentakas distinguished himself from his earliest student years, winning awards in both drawing and colour. His magnum opus remains the iconographic programme of the Holy Church of the Archangels (Agii Taxiarches) in Kalamata — the most important visual creation of the 20th century in the city, and one of the most representative examples of the artist’s work in Greece.

Beyond the wall-paintings, Kentakas produced a vast body of portable icons that today adorn churches in Kalamata, Livadia, and Athens, as well as private collections. His works are also held in France, in Lecce in Apulia, in the United States, and elsewhere.
