Dimitris Tzamouranis

Born in Kalamata in 1967, Tzamouranis studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and continued his postgraduate studies at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), having moved to Berlin in 1990. In 1995 he received the Spyropoulos Prize. His artistic vision was shaped by a deep knowledge of classical painting tradition and by the religious environment of his childhood — his grandfather was a church painter. Since around 2001 he has painted with a realistic visual language, into which he introduces mysterious elements and characters, with reality and dream subtly intertwined. He works on large-scale canvases, wooden polyptychs, or small copper plates. He has held over thirty solo exhibitions in Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Turkey, and the Czech Republic. In 2017 he took part in documenta in Kassel. His works are included in major collections in Greece and abroad. He lives and works in Berlin.
